Leogane, Haiti

Location Info

Following the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, Haiti received an outpouring of support from people just like you who wanted to do whatever they could to help this very poor country find its feet again. Now, much of the rubble has been cleared up, the tent cities are disappearing, and life has mostly gone back to normal for Haitians. But normal life to a Haitian looks very different from normal life for you and me…

Haiti was the poorest country in the western hemisphere before the earthquake, which means that earthquake aside, Haitians have been subject to corrupt government, unstable infrastructure (it’s the only country in the western hemisphere that does not have a sewer system), abject poverty, and lack of education for years. Many Haitians grow up in a world where their income is $2/day (World Bank 2012); 24.7% live in extreme poverty on less than US $1.25 per day (UNDP 2013). Haiti’s literacy rate is 61% – 64% for males and 57% for females (CIA Factbook Nov 2015). The average literacy rate for Latin American and Caribbean developing countries is 92%. (World Bank 2015). They will likely lose a baby in childbirth or know someone who already has. An estimated 1 in 285 births will result in a woman’s death, a ratio about 16 times higher than in the United States (Partners in Health 2014). Their view of hope is often very small…
