Philadelphia

Location Info

Our work in Philadelphia centers around Philadelphia International Alliance Church. In a community that is home to many refugees and immigrants from around the world there are unique challenges. Over 100 languages are spoken within a 10 block radius of the church. Poverty issues around economic opportunity and social justice issues are pervasive in the community. To combat these issues the church is focusing on business training and business opportunities for the church and those who attend the church.

Teams on the Ground

Quick Bio: Pastor Clay Katongo and his wife Michealina came to the United States as refugees from Angola. With their two children Clay Jr and Elisha, they live in the community near the church. They have a heart to help in both the physical needs and spiritual needs of the community.

Anchor Projects/Programs

Buddy Project: Many of the new immigrants or refugees into the US are adjusting to a brand new life and feel disoriented. We need volunteers who would be willing to partner directly with a immigrant family to help them navigate their new life in the US. You and your family would serve as an advocate for a family that you are paired with. Roles would be to help them work through learning new systems like visiting the grocery store and post office to helping them work through their living issues. Many times these families are isolated from their family and have no place to go on holidays. Contact us if you are interested.

Pastor Support Fund: The Pastor of the church does not have a consistent salary. A fund has been started that allows the Pastor to receive funds as needed to continue his ministry at the church.

Building Repair: The church building has several issues that need to be addressed. You and your church could adopt one of these projects and come with volunteers and the needed supplies to make the repairs. An expansive list is available to work on.

Food and Clothing bank: Many times there are needs for food and clothing within the community. People have inconsistent revenue streams and require help at times. If you or your work community or faith community would be willing to do food or clothing drives throughout the year we will be able to distribute to the community.

ESL Training: Volunteers are needed to teach ESL to people from the community. Many people who arrive in the US need to speak English to get a job or to operate in their community. We have weekend volunteer opportunities available.
